Paolo Loffredo, sixth generation of a large family of publishers and booksellers engaged in the production and distribution of books since the late nineteenth century, creates in 2012 the new editorial company Paolo Loffredo Editore. Vite dei santi Paterno e Marcello

The lives of the saints Paterno and Marcello are part of the corpus of hagiographic works by Venanzio Fortunato that, as a whole, propose an exemplum of life for Christians in view of the construction through the iteration of some constant elements: nobility of birth, abandonment of family to follow the vocation, a virtue that manifests itself from the early years, the episcopal election desired by the people and rejected for humility by the saint, ascetic life, martyrdom sine cruore, story of miracles. The analysis of texts, translated for the first time in a modern language, allows us to grasp how the undeniable stylization, practiced with awareness by the author, does not achieve a result of total homologation and does not completely cancel that clot of specificity that each life preserves.

Author

Paola Santorelli teaches Ancient christian literature at Univeristy of Naples Federico II. Her research interests are mostly focused on Christian poetry between IV and VI centuries (Giovenco, Venanzio Fortunato) and on the agiografi production of the VI and VII centuries (Venanzio Fortunato, Baudonivia).
