NELL’OFFICINA DEL VERISMO
LA NOVELLISTICA DELLA «RASSEGNA SETTIMANALE»

In the workshop of realism he moves along three intersecting paths. The first leads through the ideology and politics of post-unification Italy: through the reconstruction of Franchetti's thoughts and initiatives and Sonnino, the link between realism and a project is highlighted organization of social reformism. With the opening of the «Weekly Review» to positivism and the debate on the southern question or, more precisely, the conditions are created on the Italian social question for the transition from realism to realism. In the wake of studies in the Anglophone area, the second itinerary explores the socio-cultural premises for the affirmation of the modern novel, paying attention to the influence that the new dynamics of the publishing market have on writers.
In particular, since newspapers and magazines carve out a substantial reader base thanks to high circulations and wide circulation radius, writers join editorial teams, in exchange for generous salaries and the chance to make a name for yourself in the literary world.
What emerges strengthened is the short narrative, which finds a fixed space in the columns of periodicals, as long as the writers choose to respect the contraintes foreseen by the directors. Thus we reach the third path of the book: it shows that the «Rassegna Settimanale» occupies a place equally relevant in the process of affirmation of the modern short story, being among the first magazines to impose rigorous contraintes ai
own novelists. With the final analysis of the stories published in the weekly by Franchetti and Sonnino, the idea that the rise of realism is supported and the evolution of the short story, in Italy, proceed hand in hand.
